From building walls and floors to resurfacing ceilings and even creating decorative features in a home, plasterers are skilled tradespeople who can specialise in a wide range of areas.

It can sometimes be tempting to try to carry out the work ourselves, but with Brits spend a staggering £34 billion every year on fixing botched DIY jobs, it is often best to rely on the experts. After all, plastering is a very highly skilled and physically demanding job, so hiring a tradesman will guarantee a faster process and a better finish than a homeowner could achieve by themselves.

When will you need to hire a plasterer?

Plastering is more complex than just filling the odd hole in the wall. There are actually two main types of plastering: fibrous and solid plastering.

Fibrous plastering focuses on ornamental work, such as creating moulding or columns to complement interior design plans.

Solid plastering, meanwhile, involves applying plaster to various indoor or outdoor surfaces to create a smooth and sturdy finish. This can also include protective plastering, such as pebble dashing exterior walls for example. Additionally, most plastering companies should be able to offer a dry lining service. This is when plasterboard is used to create floor partitions and walls in the interior of a property.

Whether you require simple structural or restoration work, protective plastering or something much more decorative, a skilled plasterer will be able to help

Things to consider when hiring a plasterer

To ensure that the tradesman you hire is properly trained, it's best to inquire about their qualifications. If a plasterer has been in the trade for a long time, they should have a 3, 5 or 8 year apprenticeship, along with an advanced craft City & Guild qualification in plastering. If they are more newly qualified, then they should hold a level 3 SVQ or a level 1, 2 or 3 NVQ in plastering.

While qualifications are important, they are not everything. It is recommended that you also ask to see examples of their previous work from similar projects. It’s also a good idea to ask for testimonials from previous customers to get an idea of the plasterer’s quality.
