Find a Local Tradesperson

Sometimes you need help with something small in your home, or maybe you want to take on a big renovation project – whatever your needs, finding the right tradesperson can be tricky. Hoppy have partnered with Rated People to make the process as smooth as possible. Find out how below.

Why Hoppy partnered with Rated People

Hoppy has chosen to partner with Rated People as we believe that they are the best at helping you to find the tradesperson your home needs, in the quickest and most hassle-free way. There are over 50,000 vetted tradespeople signed up to Rated People and each job you post will be matched with up to three of them for you to pick from. The site is both easy and free to use - which is why over 1 million jobs are posted on it every year.

What can a tradesperson help you with?

When it comes to your home’s interior or exterior, you can find help from the right tradesperson. No job is too small or big. You can get help with painting the walls, hanging pictures, remodelling your home or designing your garden. A skilled tradesperson will have the expertise needed to carry out these tasks and to give you helpful advice when you need it.

How do I find a reputable tradesperson?

Finding and choosing the right tradesperson is simple, thanks to our partners Rated People. Each tradesperson has a profile page where you can see their ratings, all based on genuine experiences. When you post a job, up to three tradespeople can provide you with a quote, and you’ll be able to browse reviews from homeowners who have used their services previously.

What questions should you ask a tradesperson?

You’ll get plenty of information from the tradespeople’s profile and reviews. In addition, it’s a good idea to ask the following:

  • How long have you been in the business?

  • Are you a member of a trade organisation?

  • Can I see your license?

  • What is the timeframe to complete this job?

What certifications should a tradesperson have?

When it comes to certain jobs around the home, you’ll want to make sure that your tradesperson has the right certification. By law, any tradesperson carrying out gas work must be registered with Gas Safe. Most electrical jobs need to be carried out by a tradesperson with a Part P qualification, though this isn’t a requirement in Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can also look out for TrustMark, which is the only government endorsed scheme for tradespeople, acting as a quality stamp for the services provided.

How does Hoppy find me a tradesperson?

Hoppy has teamed up with a company called Rated People to give you access to a wide range of home maintenance services, from fixing leaky gutters to full-scale loft conversions. Post a job with complete with all the details and a rough budget and get quotes from up to three tradespeople.

What happens after I post a job?

After you post a job, you’ll be contacted by up to three tradespeople. You’ll be able to browse their profiles, where you’ll find examples of previous work alongside genuine user reviews. Then you’ll need to pick the tradesperson you want to do the job in your home.

How do I pay for the job?

Once you agree on the cost of the job, you transfer the money, whether that’s the total amount of just a part, into Shieldpay’s secure ‘vault’ – it’ll be held there until you’re satisfied that the job is complete. You have control over when the money is released, which means that you can split it up into stages, like when the tradesperson needs a deposit to fund the purchasing of raw materials.

You can also, of course, pay by cash if you wish to do so. If your tradesperson requires a deposit, it shouldn’t exceed more than 20% of the total cost. Always ask for a detail explanation and breakdown of what the deposit will cover. Cash payments aren’t protected, so be aware of the associated risks.

Are my payments secure?

Rated People are partnered with Shieldpay, so you can be sure that your payments are protected. The payment you make goes into Shieldpay’s secure ‘vault’, which is released by you once the job has been completed. You can also raise a dispute before releasing the money if you’re unsatisfied with how the job has been done.

What about cancellations?

You can delete your job posting through Rated People’s platform using the ‘Withdraw My Job’ button.

What’s TrustMark?

TrustMark is a government endorsement scheme that acts as a quality stamp for trades services. It’s there to give customers extra peace of mind when it comes to picking tradespeople. Not all tradespeople are registered with TrustMark, but the ones that are will have the badge displayed on their profile.
