An electrical issue at home can be an absolute nightmare. It’s happened to almost all of us: we’re relaxing one evening, watching TV, playing video games, using social media when all of a sudden, the power cuts out, an alarm from across the street is triggered and we’re plunged into darkness. It’s only then that we realise just how much we rely on electricity for almost every aspect of our daily lives. Not only is a power cut a major hassle when we’re trying to unwind, but it can also affect our ability to complete household tasks or even meet professional deadlines for those who work from home.

Now, a power cut isn’t something we can simply call an electrician for, as it’s the responsibility of the National Grid. If it is a Power cut and your whole neighbourhood is out of power,  you should dial 105 to let them know. However, a power cut is the perfect example of how – until electricity is taken away from us, even for a small period of time – we can often take it for granted. For something that it such a vital part of our lives, it’s crucial to rely on a skilled professional to complete those maintenance jobs and ensure everything is running smoothly.

The importance of hiring an electrical professional

While just about everyone is capable of changing a lightbulb, almost all other electrical jobs are not simple DIY tasks that we can complete by ourselves. From rewiring to the installation of electrical appliances, it is a serious skill and one that takes comprehensive training to do properly and safely.

That’s another reason why it’s so important to hire a skilled tradesperson whenever you have an electrical issue. Unlike many other jobs where a bad effort can leave you worse off financially – with botched DIY jobs leaving Brits £34 billion a year worse off – dodgy electrics can also put you and your family’s lives in danger. In 2011, a report by the Electrical Safety Council stated that around 350,000 injuries were caused by household electrical accidents, with little evidence to suggested much has changed in that time. According to governmental statistics, in 2016/2017, there was an average of 27 electrical fires a day, with cookers and ovens being the most common cause.

So, whether you’re looking to have your house rewired, have new power points installed, need new electrical appliances fitted or any other kind of electrical installation, it is vitally important that you hire someone trustworthy and qualified rather than attempting it yourself.

Considerations when hiring an electrician

When hiring any kind of tradesperson, it’s always a good idea to check their previous customer testimonials and ask about their training and experience. However, while some services, like gardening or cleaning, don’t require any specific qualifications, electrical work needs to meet a certain legal standard. All electrical work needs, by law, to be inspected and approved. This should be done either by your local authority’s Building Standards department or, more conveniently, by the tradesperson themselves.

The tradesperson can only self-certify their work if they are registered with a competent person’s scheme, such as TrustMark, the BSI, NAPIT, ELECSA or NICEIC. Ask the tradesperson if they are registered with any of these schemes, or a similar one, request evidence or check yourself on the Registered Competent Person Electrical site.

Once the work has been completed, make sure a certificate is issued from the electrician or from the Building Standards department if your tradesperson is not able to self-certify.
