Samsung S20 Ultra review

Samsung has positioned itself as a bit of a mobile market disruptor of late thanks to top-line models with hefty price tags to match Apple’s output. The new Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra joins the trend, offering consumers a high-spec piece of tech that’s as good looking as it is practical, and 5G enabled to boot. With more cameras than ever before, it also promises to make picture and video taking to the next level. Does it succeed? Find out below alongside the price, release date, and best deals.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra’s four cameras are referred to by Samsung as a ‘signature design element’ meaning that they’ve been arranged to be visually recognizable, much like the iPhone’s triple lens set-up. The main draw is obviously the 108MP camera sensor, which enables incredible resolution photos and up to 8K video recording. All the cameras lend themselves to one of the handsets best features, Single Take shooting mode. When taking a photo or video in this mode, all lenses are engaged, and post-shot you get different varieties of it all sitting neatly as one entry in your photo gallery – goodbye cluttered photo library. This also means that you don’t have to spend time selecting a particular option before shooting, allowing you to simply capture in the moment and make your selection later. Finally, the 40MP front-facing camera captures really high-quality selfies to please all those Insta lovers.

Design and display

In terms of design, the Galaxy S20 Ultra isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it is a sleek and good-looking handset with some curvature which gives it a softer appearance and an in-screen fingerprint sensor. The front-facing camera sits in a pinhole in the middle of the display and makes the screen feel expansive. Its Dynamic AMOLED display is a thing of beauty; with a refresh rate of 120Hz, just about anything displayed on the screen looks magical. Additionally, scrolling, switching between apps and all the animated elements are exceptionally smooth and delightful to navigate.

We really like the design decision to leave the left-hand edge smooth and untouched by buttons; the volume rocker and power buttons all sit on the right side while the SIM and microSD slots are at the top edge. Samsung has decided to offer the Galaxy S20 Ultra in two colourways only: Cosmic Gray and Cosmic Black, which isn’t the most exciting. Most likely, Samsung aren’t prepared to gamble on a handset this pricey with ‘fun’ colour options.

Processor and battery

The handset’s huge battery doesn’t necessarily translate to the best battery life – it’s there to support features like its impressive screen, the battery-draining 5G and the impressive processor. Still, at 5,000mAh it does perform well in tests, returning at least a full day of usage. Samsung’s Super Fast charging feature yields up to 45W with an optional charger or 25W with the charger you’ll find in the box.

Verdict

The new Samsung S20 Ultra is a lot of things; it’s big, expensive, and heavy. Whether you think those are pluses or minuses will largely depend on your relationship to your phone. For people who love their devices and tech innovation, it’ll all be worth it, but if you think that it’s all getting a bit much then the handset won’t be for you. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a powerhouse of software, design, display, and camera equipment – setting the bar high for its competitors. The 108MP camera is beyond impressive and the 5G capability makes it a device for the future.
