Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus review

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus sits in the sweet middle spot between the new Samsung S20 Ultra and the S20 models. It’s not quite as pricey but still has a fantastic list of specs to offer anyone looking for a new, top of the range handset in 2020. Want to know more? Read our review below for all information you need to know, including specs, price, release date, and the best deals.

Camera

The camera on the Galaxy S20 Plus is almost identical to the camera on the S20; the two are identical save for an additional ToF sensor found here. The triple camera set-up produces high-quality photos with stunning detail, even in low light conditions. For detail from afar, the 3x zoom lens performs impressively and you’re able to capture exactly what you want without compromising quality thanks to the optical and digital zoom combinations. There’s also the option of video recording in up to 8K while simultaneously grabbing stills at 33MP. What this means for you is that you don’t have to choose between taking an amazing video or the best photo; one video will give you the option of finding the right shot after, without splitting your attention. It’s a handy way of using the 8K video feature that will please consumers across the board.

Design and display

The Galaxy S20 Plus feels great when picked up, not too heavy (it’s lighter than the iPhone 11) but with enough heft to appear premium. It also has a really lovely and expansive screen, with a Dynamic AMOLED display that makes colours look stunning. The improved refresh rate is another welcome change that makes the S20 Plus a lovely addition to the premium offering from Samsung. The camera sits at the top, taking up less space than the bezel on the new iPhones while the fingerprint scanner is now under the glass. The handset is slightly curved, backed with glass, creating a lovely user experience that’s pleasing to look at, use, and hold in the palm of your hand. Gone is the headphone jack, though this is hardly surprising as wireless headphones gain popularity. It does lend the handset an overall sleek and minimal feel.

Processor and battery

The Exynos 990 processor makes the handset fast and responsive, as to be expected from a top spec piece of tech. There’s absolutely no lag between apps and gaming is a real pleasure too, which will appeal to many. All the great tech, processing power, and awesome screen do come at the price of battery life. Another potential issue with regards to battery is 5G. It’s well known that 5G is a massive power drain so it’s nice to see that the battery size is boosted to 4,500mAh here; bigger than the S20 model’s but smaller than the S20 Ultra. It should last about a day though you’ll struggle if you use all the top features. Charging is fast via the 25W USB-C charger that’s in the box and the handset supports wireless charging too.

Verdict

Samsung’s S20 series has impressed us across the board and this handset is no exception. The Galaxy S20 Plus will be ideal for anyone after a premium smartphone that performs well in all categories, looks the part, and takes some of the best photos out there. Special mention has to go to the screen, both in terms of size and quality; it really needs to be seen to be believed. The S20 Plus is so impressive, in fact, that we predict it’ll be one of the phones to beat this year.
