What is OnePlus?

When people think of the big names for smartphone brands, the usual suspects come to mind: Samsung, Apple, and Huawei. However, one name is often overlooked, OnePlus. While it may not be as well-known as its rivals, this model’s lineage makes it far from a new kid on the block.

Made by Chinese manufacture OnePlus – from which it derives its name – the OnePlus 6 is their latest flagship model released after only a few years of breakneck development. This smartphone series began with the aptly titled OnePlus One, which was praised for being cheaper than many similar phones available that year, while having better specifications in certain instances.

This was followed by the OnePlus 2, which brought the brand into the public eye with greater success, thanks once again to its blend of great technology at an exceptional price. After this, to show off the diversity of their range, OnePlus released the OnePlus X, which was their entrant into the budget phone market. It was like their first model but with a different display and it once again exemplified the company’s commitment to great value.

They continued their range with the OnePlus 3, notable for its commitment to VR and a brand-new processor. As usual, it received great reviews from critics, with further improvements to be made in the OnePlus 3T.

We then skip a number to find ourselves at the OnePlus 5, released in 2017, complete with a dual lens-camera and 8GB of RAM, all built on Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. As was now a tradition with OnePlus, this was again given improvements in the OnePlus 5T instalment, for example with its face recognition software and improved camera.

OnePlus have clearly learned a huge amount over the few years they’ve been in the mobile industry. The culmination of all that work has come in the form of the OnePlus 6, their latest top of the range model, setting its sights on challenging the industry juggernauts through quality and price. If you haven’t heard of OnePlus before, they’re more than worth knowing about and are considered among the best of the best in the mobile industry.

OnePlus 6 Screen
One of the biggest – quite literally – selling points of the OnePlus 6 is no doubt its epic 6.28-inch full HD screen, which outclasses so much of the competition, including the previous 5T display. It has a Full Optic AMOLED panel with a 19:9 aspect ratio, offering 2280 x 1080 402 pixels per-inch.

For the price, this phone’s screen is close to the big hitters. It feels bright, detailed and, with an 84% screen to body ratio, impresses with sheer size. This extra room makes it ideal for using its front facing camera or general browsing, as you don’t have to strain your eyes to make out details. And, at this price range, there’s not much that can compete.

OnePlus 6 Camera
While the improvements on the camera from the OnePlus 5T are subtle, they are also significant. The sensor on the back camera has been improved, which means better resolution in low light conditions. The OnePlus 6 utilises optical image stabilisation (OIS) and electronic image stabilisation for further improvements in dark lighting, as well as reducing the effects of blurring and a shaky camera. The specs may be similar, but the performance and practicalities have been improved upon.

As for the front camera, it uses innovative software to work out what to blur to deliver the best possible photo. These two cameras should be more than enough for the most passionate amateur photographers. The phone also includes a slow-motion mode – a nice addition and can capture footage at up to 480 fps, including the option to swap for 240 fps and get 1080p as opposed to 720p. Regular video recording is also available in 4k at 60 fps.

OnePlus 6 Power
The cameras and screen resolution are top notch, but what about the hardware? The OnePlus 6 uses a Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6/8GB of RAM, which is more than enough to handle almost any tasks thrown at it. This means that the everyday user won’t have any issues with slowdown or lag.

OnePlus 6 Design
The OnePlus 6 has a sturdy all glass design Gorilla Glass 5, which means it has a sophisticated, modern appearance while still being hard to break. The buttons are also laid out well and everything from browsing to popping in your SIM has been made straightforward.

In addition to this, the OnePlus 6 boasts a fingerprint scanner on the front and rear of the phone, which means it’s never been easier to unlock your phone. There’s also a face unlock, which at an estimated 0.4 seconds is impressively quick and has been tested to perform well in low light.

OnePlus 6 Battery Life
Obviously, this partially depends on how you are using the phone, but a single charge should be enough to keep you going for an entire day before it needs to be plugged back in – even with that chunky screen to power – thanks to the phone’s excellent power efficiency. It’s also quick to charge, going from 0% to 60% in around half an hour.

OnePlus 6 verdict

Overall, the OnePlus 6 is a fantastic piece of kit that really builds upon this brand’s past successes with a great sense of quality, insight and innovation. It’s perfect for those looking for a top end phone but who don’t want to pay top end prices.
