You may not know this but Nokia is currently the third biggest supplier of handsets in the UK, after Apple and Samsung, beating out its competition by offering comparably affordable smartphones. With so many models on the market, it can be difficult to know whether you’re making the right choice. Our guide to the best Nokia phone deals means you can be sure that you will find the best one, most suited to your needs.

Brand History

Nokia was founded in 1865 and the headquarters remain in its native Finland. As you can imagine, when the company originally came to be, it had absolutely nothing to do with mobile phones! At first it was a pulp mill, later moving into electricity generation and eventually rubber manufacturing.  In 1970 the company began working with the Finish military, making military equipment like gas masks and professional mobile radios and telephones.

In 1982 Nokia launched the first mobile ‘carphone’ but had little to no interest in developing this idea further into personal mobile phones for the wider public, perceiving them to be far too futuristic for the average consumer.

A decade later, in 1992, the Nokia 1011 model became the first commercially available mobile phone.

Brand Evolution

In recent years, Nokia has had a fair share of market wins and losses. In 2013, as Apple was conquering consumers with its offerings and Google injected cash into Android, Nokia still operated outmoded Symbian software, positioning itself miles behind its competitors. This had a devastating effect on the business; 2007 saw Nokia dominate the smartphone market with a share of 50.8% which dropped to a mere 3.1% by 2013. Still, with a range of rebranding and redesign efforts, Nokia promised they would make a comeback.

Brand USP

Nokia’s USP is undeniably brand recognition. For many consumers, especially those over 35, Nokia is synonymous with mobile phones, as it was likely to have been the making of their first one. It has a reputation for being reliable and durable, with many still wistfully lamenting the battery life and the supposed indestructibility of Nokia’s first models - especially when compared to the fragile nature of many modern smartphones.

Iconic Nokia Models

  • Nokia 1011 (1992): measuring almost 20cm long with an extendable antenna, this would become the model that all future phones would try to improve upon.
  • Nokia 3310 (2000): this sold close to 130 million units worldwide and became known for its superhero-like durability, with many comparing it to a brick.
  • Nokia 7600 (2004): resembling a Tamagotchi, with a similarly limited number of functions, this was a great example of how the mobile was seen as a bit of a trendy novelty, compared to the life-essential device of today; shaped like a teardrop it was supposed to appeal to those looking for something quirky.
  • Nokia N90 (2005): launched as one of three glitzy N-series phones, this model looked like a camcorder with an extendable and rotating screen functions, encouraging its users to get creative.
  • Nokia Lumia 1020 (2013): many consider this to be the best camera phone ever made, with its 41MB PureView camera and decent Windows OS, this was the last ever flagship device before the company’s sale to Windows.
