A brief history of Huawei
Huawei might not be the biggest name when it comes to the UK smartphone market, but they are, in fact, one of the biggest in the world. The Chinese company have actually been around for 30 years and in 2012, they overtook Ericsson as the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer. They actually even overtook Apple to become the second largest smartphone operator in the world.
As they start to make their move into Europe, they are setting themselves up to potentially be the top company in the global smartphone industry. So, when you look at a Huawei product, you are far from looking at a plucky underdog. This is one of the biggest and best phone companies around.
They joined the phone market back in 2005 and since then have gone from strength to strength, with their most recent products being aimed at taking on the very top end of the market. It’s not just smartphones they have set their sights on either. Huawei has a huge range of tech products, including smartwatches, tablet PCs and modems, as well as running network technologies for telecommunications operators’ networks and services, and producing software and equipment to enterprise customers. All in all, they are a huge company.
Many who haven’t heard of Huawei may be surprised that a company this big could exist without them even knowing about them. Obviously, that is down to the difference in market shares throughout the world. However, what’s important to note here for potential Huawei customers is that you will be buying from a very successful and trusted company which is known across the globe for creating top quality products.

An overview of the Huawei P20 Pro features
Make no mistake about it, the Huawei P20 Pro is an absolute statement of intent by Huawei that they are coming for the very top end of the mobile phone market throughout the world. It wants to go toe-to-toe with the absolute best of the best, and with a pretty heavy price tag – it can cost you upwards of £550 – it’s going to need a lot to back it up.
So, does it pull it off? We’d say so. While we don’t think the Huawei P20 Pro completely leaves its competitors in the dust, it certainly gives them something to worry about.
For starters, its camera is absolutely phenomenal. It includes no less than three rear cameras, comprising of a 40MP for the main rear camera, a 20MP black and white camera and 3x zoom 8MP camera too. If specs mean little to you, then let us simply assure you that this all adds up to fantastic image capturing even in low light conditions, allowing the P20 Pro to rival some of the most expensive models in this regard. Great resolution is also found in the front camera, which helps with a reliable face unlocking feature.
The P20 Pro’s CPU, RAM and storage capabilities are also all rock solid, and it even comes with a large battery life, so you can rely on it while out and about for long periods. Design wise, it’s pretty stunning too, thanks to its shiny metal finishing, choice of stunning colours and use of durable Gorilla Glass. And just as important as any of these heavy stats is the fact that it’s simply a joy to use. Easy and intuitive, this is not a phone just for tech-heads who want to brag about bagging the latest model: it’s a smartphone that is ideal for just about anyone.
It may not be perfect – there are elements of the screen that could be improved and there’s minor flaws here and there, such as the irritating lack of a headphone jack – but all in all, we have to say that the Huawei P20 Pro is an excellent choice for a top end phone. It’s definitely one that you should seriously consider amongst all the usual smartphone candidates.
