6 simple changes you can make to live GREENER

06 Jun 2019

It’s Environmental Awareness Day – yay! To embrace green and give mother earth a virtual hug, I’ve put together a helpful list of simple changes everyone can make to ditch plastic and live greener.

1.    Got milk?

If you live in London, you may have noticed the reappearance of glass milk bottles dotted around… this is because more and more people are ditching the plastic milk containers and opting to have their dairy delivered by their trusty milk-person in reusable glass bottles.

Our organic pints are delivered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Milk & More (who we use for deliveries) also have an extensive range of juices in glass bottles, so we added grapefruit and orange juice too.

2.    Clean Up!

Ditching soaps, shampoos and conditioners in plastic bottles was actually the first change we made as a family to reduce our plastic wastage. We started simply by moving from bottled shower gel to bar soap and recently started using bar shampoo (which I LOVE by the way!) Though I’ve not yet been able to fully ditch the plastic containers for conditioner, I discovered that Lush products come in fully recycled containers and you can take your empty tubs back into store for them to recycle.

3.    The Panda’s have it

Follow the example of our black and white fluffy friends and love bamboo! Bamboo toothbrushes are another fab way to give up plastic. Bamboo brushes are much better for the environment because they take on average 4-6 months to decompose in a home composter. By contrast, a plastic toothbrush can take hundreds of years to fully decompose. Plus they come in all kinds of rainbow colours - what's not to love?

4.    It’s in the bag

Bring your own re-useable bag each time you shop. Not only will you save yourself 5p a bag, you’ll also help the planet! I even take mine clothes shopping and to the corner shop. For the discerning shopper, I love LOQI, who offer design-savvy options and have the added advantage of folding down to practically nothing, which makes it so easy to pop into your handbag or pocket.

5.    Get some Bottle!

We love sparkling water at our house, and over the years noticed that between myself and my partner, we were going through a shameful amount of plastic and glass bottles each week. Enter the Sodastream… sparkling water at the touch of a button and they even offer a recycling scheme for the gas bottles – take them to any supplier to be refilled and you can purchase a recycled bottle for half the cost. Not only are we saving a lot of money, but I can’t remember the last time I bought a plastic bottle of water!

Additionally, I’ve also bought a reusable water bottle which I now take everywhere, and it keeps the sparkling water lovely and cool all day – win win!

6.    Coffee Time

Taking a reusable cup for your morning coffee is not only better for the planet but also better for your wallet. Many high street coffee chains are now offering a discount if you bring your own cup.

Top tip – avoid a cup with a metal interior as this can sometimes give your drink a metallic taste. Opting for a ceramic or glass interior will keep the coffee tasting super smooth, just like your barista intended!
